Tops Down//Bottom's Up: Full-speed ahead!

Welcome to my debut on The General Zone. I am Johnny Confidant and every Thursday I'll be bringing you the philosophies with EDH construction, strategy in both color and construction with theories about how your deck can perform to it's maximum potential, but first let's get to know who I am.

Currently I play 95% EDH and 5% Standard at my local card shop, so EDH is my format of choice. Still, being a dual citizen of Izzet and Dimir can be hard sometimes. Lazav wants me to keep my enemies close, Niv-Mizzet wants me to further my experiential research and somewhere in there I make it all work. I have a Tapped out account under the name Ninnyz, You can find the link Here. I have played EDH a little over a year now, trying a handful of different generals, and I'm always working on a handful more.

I first started playing Magic back when "Invasion" was the new set on the block. I was a curious 13-year-old who'd logged a lot of miles playing Yu-Gi-Oh! on weekends. So I thought I'd try to play a Goblin/Lightning Bolt deck, which was fairly similar to a successful deck I'd been running in Yu-Gi-Oh!

Though I was having fun, I didn't win much, if at all. Long story short, I became disillusioned with both Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh! and I quit both games.

But I got back into Magic at 22. Me and my roommate were bored walking around Wal-Mart making fun of people when one day we discovered a couple Magic 2010 Intro packs on clearance. Felt like a sign, cause there were only two left, and at $6.99, the investment felt like a small price to pay for some yet.

For my roommate, it wasn't. Five months later he decided to join the Army, so I put away my Foil Lightweilder Paladin and his friends, and took up Yu-Gi-Oh! again.

I bounced back between Yu-Gi-Oh! and Magic for the next few months trying to find a playgroup for either of the games that my income could support. I found some for each but they never took to the more intense game play I sought for.

Still, I kept my cards, and I was glad I did. Cause I got re-re-introduced to Magic when I met this amazing girl the following year. We'd been dating about 5 months when she told me about EDH.

Needless to say, I was sold. On her, and the format!

Commander, being such a complex and unique game, allows us so much opportunity for fun, creativity, and growth. It's exciting to be able to have fun with these old cards that I can appreciate for nostalgia and the ability to once again, abuse as spells. EDH takes me back to the ideas that I loved about Magic when I was 13. Being able to afford it now makes it even sweeter.

Over the past year I've had a blast, whether it's just playing 1v1 with my fiancee, or squeezing in as many multiplayer games as I can at FNM with friends. It's what keeps me going for hours after, reading up on the Gatherer and Daily MTG.

The games are always different, as are the people you get to meet and interact with. I guess you could say I kinda get to have it all- girl included. And that's too special to leave unmentioned. I've landed here in this land of Elder Dragons, I've got everything I want, and I'm here to stay

"You always remember your first" is something I have heard numerous times, so let's talk about mine. My first general was Riku of Two Reflections although he didn't look the way he (or should I say... she) did when I got the deck.

Who's That Ladyyyyyy!??!

That's my first General, three *Ahem* "Gifted" mages of Blue, Red, and Green. My girlfriend (now fiancee) bought me the Mirror Mastery and handed me this great proxy, and I've been hooked ever since.
Now that we have delved into who I am, it's time to look at what I will be doing every Thursday here on The General Zone. I will be talking about EDH as I see it, sharing some known and unknown strategies for Commanders, as well as individual theories and how to utilize them.

It is important that I repeat the part about this being an interpretation. It is easy to come out and say that "A" is better than "Z" by pointing out that it's not only the first of the alphabet, but it is also a vowel ect. Someone could easily be offended and say that "Z" is just as good if not better to which we could spend hours bickering or I could just add a disclaimer before each post. I don't want to do that and i'm sure you wont want to read the same paragraph at the top of each article I write, so let's agree that everyone has a preference and all I am trying to do is open up your mind to new ways of thinking along with new toys. :)

I plan on doing so by breaking this up into different styles of article.

The first is "Tops Down," which is about the General and constructing the deck. I'll look at a few Legendary Creatures, both the commonly seen and hardly noticed, offering up objective suggestions for a deck design and how it can perform. This is the Philosophy part of the article.

The "Bottoms Up" segment is the inverse. I'll look at a card that has great potential in a deck but isn't legendary or has a set-back that makes it more difficult to run as a Commander. This will be the Theory in the piece. The "glue" that ties it all together is the Strategy by which I mean how you connect the two. I make no guarantee that I will always do both in a segment, nor will I deny that both wont be included.

My goal is to change the status quo, ultimately challenging players to think differently about cards and find ideas that will hopefully ignite or re-ignite that EDH fire.

So be ready for next Thursday when I go "Bottoms up" with Melek, Izzet Paragon!
Let's get ready for Dragon's Maze!

Doesn't he just scream, "Abuse me?"
