You Make the Pick #2

Hey Zoners, Grandpa Growth here, back with another You Make the Pick! This week we're looking at a pack from the Common/Uncommon Cube of the one and only Eric Klug. You might be asking yourself..."Grandpa, why are you talking about Cube again? Isn't this blog supposed to be about Commander?"

I would say...shut it little whippersnappers! We're going to talk about what Grandpa wants to talk about and you're going to like it. We're probably going to talk about cube until Born of the Gods comes out and then we are going to talk about that. So get used to it.

Now back to the story...Eric Klug is a master card alteration artist and an avid contributor to the Magic community. He writes for GatheringMagic.com, sharing his C/Ube and several other brew-tiful inventions. Check out his website to see some of the amazing work he has done: http://klugalters.blogspot.com/ His style basic has no range limit. It is kind of incredible, but enough about the man, we want to talk about the cards!

The Pack:

The Pick:

You should know right off the bat that this format can be very aggressive. The decks with the most focused strategies are the ones that tend to be successful. There are also discrete archetypes within Klug's cube. Trying to play a multicolor junk deck isn't a great idea because the power level isn't significantly higher than monocolor decks AND fixing can be tough to come by. That being said, this pack is a little strange. There is no White card, although Sculler and Dryad Militant want to be in White decks. The Blue and Black cards aren't that exciting, Fire // Ice is probably the best of them. There is a solid start on a Green ramp deck here, Llanowar is a powerful accelerator and much better than a random threat like Phantom Centaur.

If I had my druthers though I would want to go aggressive Red, starting with Chain Lightning. Aggro is good and cheap removal is also good. Even if we don't end up in that deck, we will still have a splashable removal spell that will work in any archetype. It is also likely that one of: Rakdos Cackler, Izzet Boilerworks, Savage Lands, or Ghor-Clan Rampager will table, giving us a clear choice on the wheel.

GG's Choices:
1. Chain Lightning
2. Llanowar Elves
3. Fire // Ice
4. Man-o'-War
5. Savage Lands

But the real question here is...what would you take?
